A WORD FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
It is amazing to see so many thousands of dollars and hours distilled into these playlists. Each one is a dense network of ideas, sounds, memories and personalities.
To find the right music for a show, I sift through and buy (I’m old fashioned enough to insist on buying anything that I’m remotely interested in; to the detriment of my bank account and my hard drive) on average a hundred albums. I follow ideas, words, look for correspondences and strange connections.
Ultimately music – what Borges calls “that mysterious form of time” – is a gloriously ineffable and unknowable. It has been one of the great pleasures of my role at Circa that I have spent so much time with a pantheon of extraordinary composers, songwriters and musicians. They have been my guide and education.
